What we collect, and what we do with it
Past the Headline is an independent publication written by Elias Calfat. This notice explains what personal data the site collects, why, who else handles it and what you can ask us to do about it. It describes the site as it actually works rather than every thing a website might conceivably do.
The publication runs no advertising, no tracking pixels and no third-party analytics script. Nobody is profiling which teardowns you read.
What is collected
When: When you subscribe to the weekly digest.
Why: To send you the digest, and to send a welcome message confirming the subscription.
Kept: Until you unsubscribe, which deletes the record.
When: When you send a message through the contact or share-your-thoughts form.
Why: To read and reply to what you sent.
Kept: Retained so the correspondence can be followed up. Ask and it will be deleted.
When: Only if you create an account.
Why: To sign you in and to keep your saved articles and followed topics attached to you.
Kept: Until you delete your account.
When: When you save a teardown to your reading list.
Why: So the list is there next time. Signed out, it stays in your own browser and is never sent anywhere.
Kept: Until you remove them, or clear your browser if signed out.
Subscribing also records that a subscription happened, together with the email address, so the publication can see how the list is growing.
Who else handles it
Personal data is never sold or rented. It is shared only with the providers that operate the publication: a hosting and database provider, an email delivery provider, and a customer relationship management tool.
These providers operate outside Saudi Arabia, so your data is stored and processed abroad.
Storage in your browser
The site stores a small amount of information in your own browser rather than in cookies sent to a server: the tokens that keep you signed in, your light or dark theme choice, and any articles you save while signed out. None of it is used for advertising or tracking, and clearing your browser data removes all of it.
Confidential information
Please do not send confidential, proprietary or non-public information through the contact forms. Past the Headline works only from sources that can lawfully be shared and cannot accept material subject to a confidentiality, employment or professional obligation. Submissions of that kind will be deleted.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of the personal data held about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. You can also object to how it is used, or ask for it in a portable form. Every digest carries an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing removes your address from the list.
To exercise any of these, email eliascalfat@past-the-headline.com.
Children
Past the Headline is written for a professional readership and is not directed at children. Accounts and subscriptions are not knowingly offered to anyone under 18.
